Ombraz’s Armless Sunglasses Gear Review
18th Jun 2021
In all honesty, we were a little skeptical about Ombraz's armless sunglasses at first. I mean, we've thrown away tons of sunglasses because their arms broke. Why would we want a pair without arms? Isn't that like eating a taco without hot sauce? It just didn't make sense.
Yet, we were highly intrigued and seriously live for genius ideas, and deep down suspected this might be the case with Ombraz.
Plus, when we read their claim to "build the most carbon-negative product in the world, that solves a problem and serves a purpose," we just had to try a pair and see what these crazy tacos without sauce sunglasses were all about.
We ordered the Dolomites with a charcoal grey frame and grey lenses. At least they will look good, we thought.
They arrived in a simple earthly brown package that screamed consideration. We knew genius was at hand with a beautiful package like that and that we were about to experience legend status gear.
(And this is also where we got to eat a massive slice of humble pie.)
Lucky for us, they arrived just in time for a long hike we had planned through the mountains. We had chosen a newly opened route (post-fire) and knew some sections would be exposed, so a good pair of sunglasses were a must. So we crossed our fingers and toes and tucked them into our pack.
We were so impressed! They made our rugged hike more comfortable and forgot all about them on our face (score). They are our favorite pair of hiking sunglasses to date, and we wear them every hike now. No wonder they've won multiple awards!
The top features that stood out to us are:
- Super comfortable- you can barely tell they’re on your nose.
- Wearing a hat with them on a long day of hiking doesn’t push down on your ears and cause sore spots.
- Very lightweight.
- Won’t lose them because already around the neck a d they don’t fall off your face. The unique cord keeps them put no matter what you’re doing.
- Sides block out the sun very well.
- They are high quality and durable.
- The lenses are smudge-proof (best invention ever) and scratch-proof.
- Store super-thin and take up less space when you need to tuck them away.
- Forget you’re wearing them! They are that comfortable.
So what about their claim to build the most carbon-negative product in the world? It turns out they might just be doing that!
-They plant 20 mangrove trees for every pair of Ombraz they sell, with the help of Eden Reforestation Projects. To date, they’ve planted 330,020 trees!
-The trees sequester 330x more carbon than is emitted to produce and deliver each pair of sunglasses- making them the most carbon-negative product currently available on the market.
-The tree planting provides meaningful employment to impoverished areas in Madagascar.
-20 trees absorb over 13,600 pounds of carbon dioxide per year, prevent soil erosion, return dry, arid land to its once fertile state, and provide habitat critical for diverse ecosystems.
-They also calculate their carbon output and plant additional mangrove trees to offset all carbon emitted from travel for content, product development, and shows/events.
-All back-end shipping materials are strategically reused.
-Their packaging is compostable, plastic-free packaging printed with soy-based inks.
Overall, they are 100% a company we can get behind, and they make a high-quality, intentional product that deserves high accolades.
Currently, they have three sunglass styles available with multiple frame/lens options. They also have a blue-blocker version available.
